Habeas Corpus

A writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention. (to determine if a state's detention of a prisoner is valid.)


It is an order from a court to a subordinate government authority ordering the government official to properly fulfil their official duties or correct an abuse of discretion.

Quo Warranto

It is used to challenge a person's right to hold a public or corporate office.

Writ of Certiorari

An appellate court decides to review a case at its discretion.

Writ of Prohibition

To stop subordinate authority from doing something that the law prohibits.
